🇨🇴 Arrancando en frío/🇺🇸 Cold Start
🇨🇴 Hasta ahora ninguno de nuestros paseos por carretera ha sido en invierno. Esta es la primera vez que salimos como familia a recorrer miles de kilómetros mientras que se espera hielo sobre las vías. Sí lo hemos encontrado antes. Pero ha sido por la coincidencia de una tormenta o por la altitud.
Otro aspecto de viajar en invierno es que hay menos horas de luz cada día. Contamos con unas 10, en lugar de las 14 a 16 de los días de verano. El sol brilla desde el sur durante todo su arco. Hoy estuvimos manejando hacia el sur. No me gusta manejar con gafas oscuras, pero esta vez fue inevitable.
El paso de montaña de Utah County hacia Price tiene muchas curvas y hay que planear bien dónde pasar carros, tanto subiendo como bajando. Con la posibilidad de hielo todas las deciciones se complican un poco más.
Andamos en el mismo Discovery 2018 en el que hemos hecho nuestros viajes largos. Ya tiene más de cien mil kilómetros y es difícil de ignorar que en un viaje de estos se le pone a prueba todo el tiempo. Esperamos que se porte tan bien como lo ha hecho hasta ahora.
Almorzamos en el Outlaw Cafe, en Wellington, Utah. Nos gustaron las fotos e historias de bandidos del viejo oeste que decoraban las paredes. Por la noche comimos en el Granary Bar & Grill, en Monticello. Queda en un pequeño hotel en un granero antiguo, lleno de decoraciones históricas.
Finalmente llegamos a nuestra cabaña en Bluff Gardens, en pleno centro de Bluff, Utah. La cabaña fue muy cómoda, excepto por que el agua fría del baño no fluía. El frío reciente había congelado la tubería que alimentaba la cabaña, entonces tuvimos que improvisar con agua de la cocina. 🍌
🇺🇸 Until now none of our road trips has taken place during the winter. This is the first time we set out as a family to drive thousands of miles with the expectation of icy roads. We’ve had icy roads before. But it was coincidentally, due to a storm or high altitude.
Another detail about winter travel is fewer daylight hours. We get around 10 instead of the 14 to 16 of summer days. The sun shines from the south during the length of its arc. Today, we drove southbound. I don’t like wearing shades when I drive, but it was inevitable this time.
The mountain pass from Utah County to Price has winding roads and it takes some planning to pass other vehicles, both during the climb and the descent. The possibility of ice on the road complicates things a bit.
We’re driving the same 2018 Discovery from all our long road trips. It now has more than 65k miles on it and it’s difficult to ignore that on a trip like this one we put it to the test constantly. We hope it performs as it has until now.
We had lunch at the Outlaw Cafe in Wellington, Utah. We liked the pictures and stories about the old west bandits that decorated the walls. At night we had dinner at the Granary Bar & Grill, in Monticello. It’s part of a bed and breakfast in an old granary filled with historical decor.
Finally, we arrived at our cabin at Bluff Gardens, right in the center of Bluff, Utah. The cabin was very comfortable, except that due to the very cold temperatures the cold water pipes to the bathroom had frozen. We had to improvise with water from the kitchen. 🍌
